This figure shows the different types of audio
compression used in MPEG systems and the relative amount of
compression that they can provide. This table uses a 2 channel stereo signal
that is sampled at 44.1k samples per second, 16 bits per sample as a
reference. The MPEG layer 1 coder can compress this signal to approximately
384 kbps (4:1 compression). The MPEG layer 2 coder can compress the signal to
192 kbps (8:1 compression). The MP3 coder can compress the signal to 128 kbps
(12:1 compression). The AAC coder can compress the signal to 96 kbps (16:1
compression).
